Summer Vacation in Greenville, SC

Now that school’s been out for a few weeks and the summer rhythm has settled in, you may be hearing that constant refrain — “I’m booooored.” What to do to turn summer around and make things fresh and fun again? We have some ideas to get you out of the house and having a great time here in Upstate South Carolina.

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

It’s easy to live in a place for years or even decades and miss out on some of the landmarks that you’ve learned to take for granted. One idea we have for brightening up summer? Spend the week being “Greenville tourists” — even if you’ve lived here for decades!

Pick out those “must-see landmarks” in your town and schedule a visit! Head up into northern Greenville county and visit Poinsett Bridge, an old ruin from the early 19th century still standing after all these years just outside the friendly town of Travelers Rest. We also recommend a visit to the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum right outside the Greenville Drive Stadium. Have you ever spent time following the trail to find all the Mice on Main? If you haven’t, it’s a great idea for the young (and young at heart) and a wonderful way to explore downtown Greenville.

If you’re more into visiting parks, try out the hidden gem at Linky Stone Park! A garden designed to be enjoyed and interacted with by children of all ages, it connects to the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail and is a great spot to start your early morning walk! Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway 11, in far northern Greenville County, is a beautiful drive that will take you right by Table Rock State Park, Hagood Mill (be sure to visit on the 3rd Saturday of the month!), and all the way through to Lake Joccassee.

Sometimes the best way to beat summer boredom is just to take a day to be a tourist in your own home!

Learn Something New!

Maybe you’ve always been interested in yoga, or learning to speak Italian, or even just wondered how hard it might be to learn to knit, crochet, or cook new recipes you’ve never tried before. Summer is the perfect time to start! Greenville and its surrounding areas have plenty of options for picking up that new skill you’ve been thinking of, with a variety of locations and times that let you fit things in around your busy schedule.

Yoga for All

Looking into yoga? We have a few great options! Gather GVL has outdoor yoga throughout the week. Soul Yoga offers $10 yoga on the lawn for non-members, providing casual yogis with a great opportunity to jump into a class here and there without paying for a monthly membership.

If you are interested in a regular yoga practice, though, Soul is a great place for hot yoga. Also check out Southern Om or It’s Yoga! Studio, which offers everything from beginner classes to yoga teacher training to Kids Yoga (child must be 5 – 11). Those are just a few of the many studios around the area, so if none of the ones we mentioned are exactly what you’re looking for, keep searching — you’re sure to find the perfect studio for you.

For the Love of Homemade

When it comes to creative homemaking skills, Greenville has you covered yet again. Yarn & Y’All, conveniently located right on Laurens Road, has regular classes and welcomes any knitter, beginner or expert, to sit in with their latest project.

Plate 108 in downtown Greer runs cooking classes that fill up fast, with great options for children, adults, and families!

Beyond Books

If you’re the type that likes to curl of with a good book, then make M. Judson your next destination! This downtown Greenville bookstore does a whole lot more than sell books. M. Judson maintains regular weekly dinners with local chefs and serves as a venue for other networking events, book signings, and other interactive gatherings. There’s always something new happening, so keep an eye on their calendar!
