We love when clients come in with truly unique must-have features in mind. Today, we’d like to share with you three of our favorite unique home design ideas!

Hidden Rooms With Secret Doorways

Have you ever seen a movie where the main character stumbles upon a secret room hidden behind a bookcase or secret door? Well, these sorts of rooms aren’t just for the movies. You can have one added into your home design, too! Adding a “secret room” is definitely a unique feature!

Clients who use otherwise unused space this way have built themselves personal offices, libraries, or even playrooms for the kids — all ‘hidden’ behind a seemingly normal panel of wall or with a door meant to look like a built-in bookshelf!

Add Slide-Out Storage Under the Stairs

We encourage our clients to truly make the most of all available storage space within their homes — after all, even the largest custom home will need storage space once you’ve settled in officially!

One fun idea for adding extra storage space without bulk is to build in slide-out storage shelving underneath your staircase. Keep sports equipment, rain boots, and other objects that might clutter up your mudroom or entryway out of sight, but still on-hand when you need to get moving quickly out the door.

Add In a “Christmas Switch”

Are you the type that goes totally over-the-top when decorating for the holidays? Does the Christmas tree go up the day after Thanksgiving and stay up right through New Year’s Eve (or even Valentine’s Day)? Then the “Christmas switch” is a great option for you!

Essentially, when planning out your home with our Design Team, designate a space where you know you want the Christmas tree to go. This may be a large bay window off the living room, or a formal dining area, or even at the top of the stairs, overlooking the entryway of your home.

Ask the Design Team to ensure that at least one set of outlets along that wall is directly controlled by a light switch, rather than sending constant power.

This way, you won’t have to plug and unplug your Christmas lights along the mantel and tree. Just flip a switch and everything goes off for the day, flip again to make everything bright and festive once the sun goes down!

It’s a small and fairly easy-to-install feature, but pretty unique, and you’ll find it useful through the holidays and likely all year long, too!
